The World is Shrinking. Here’s Proof

We often hear people mention the term  “global village”, but what does it really mean? It means that, thanks to technology, the world is becoming more accessible than ever before. Here’s my own recent experience with that.

About a year ago, I saw this Forbes documentary on YouTube about a remarkable young man in New York City, who is revolutionising education in America’s inner cities. You can check out the documentary here:

Now, I am passionate about technology and about entrepreneurship, especially among the youth, and hence I was totally impressed by this young man. I needed to get in touch with him.

But how? In the old days, that would have been almost impossible. But thanks to the age of technology and social media, it’s not just possible, but easy. I simply went onto LinkedIn, searched for him, and sent him an invitation to connect. A couple of days later, he accepted, and we’ve been corresponding ever since.

Book

In the video above (in case you haven’t seen it) he mentions he is writing a book. A couple of months ago, he completed the book and put out word via LinkedIn that he was looking for people to pre-read and comment on the book.

I accepted, read the book, and was totally blown away. It is a really, really good book. I sent him my comments.

And then, a few weeks later, he posted this on LinkedIn:

Notice the first comment on the back cover. Yup, that’s me. I did not imagine that he would take my comment and put it in the book, much less right on top! It is such an honour!

About the book

Karim’s book is one of the most inspiring I’ve read in a long time, and true to my comments, I really wish I could send it back in time to my younger self.

In the book Karim tells his life story, about how he grew up under difficult circumstances, but did not let this stop him from tapping into his potential and achieving his dream. He took control of his life and became the master of his own fate.

This sends a clear message to all young people today: there are no excuses. Stop complaining, stop waiting for good things to happen, stop with the feeling of entitlement. Get out there and make things happen.

This book has become a family reading time book in my home. I recommend everyone buy it – it’s available on Amazon:

Breaking Through: From Rough to Ready by Karim Abouelnaga

Conclusion

Thanks to technology, the world really is shrinking, and it has never been easier to connect with people around the world and expand your networks and your horizons.

I never imagined that by connecting with this amazing young man, that I would one day be on the cover of his book. Not only is it a tremendous honour, but imagine the exposure it is going to give me and the brand that I founded!

There are no excuses anymore, as this technology is available to everyone. No special equipment required, no expensive software. If you have a decent cellphone and some data, the world is literally in your hand.

So, what are you waiting for?
